That was just about the coolest thing I've ever seen. I saw a guy that put a linux box in his car... This totally blows him away. Wow.

You'll need a hack (http://homepage.mac.com/geerlingguy/mac_support/mac_help/pages/15-burn_idvd_other.html) to get iDVD to "see" external burners.
I am very, very happy with my LaCie d2 16X dual-layer external burner, which comes with Toast 6 Titanium, all for $199 at the Apple Store. Same front size as all d2 drives, about 50% deeper than the "normal" d2 drives (fits nicely on the LaCie desktop rack with my 120GB and 250GB LaCie d2 externals).

I agree with the previous three posts. And I think late Sep./Early October would be an excellent date.
This past Friday a classmate had a look at the iBook I brought to class and said he was going to get a Mac. :) He said that he hates desktops and wants to do something with Photography, but not for heavy usage. I recommended him to wait until Sep/Oct until new iBooks are released, so he (1) can get an older one cheap, or (2) get the fastest one.

I'll be at the ardmore store with my girlfriend! I'll be the long haired hippy looking teenager. I should get a paper with my macrumors user name on it and take it to my shirt!
Or maybe just a sign that says macrumors on it so we can meet up with each other.
What time would be a good time to start waiting outside, I want to make sure I get a shirt.

I'm glad to hear that you are liking your iBook. You will probably get used to the keyboard soon. :)

Well... it WILL set a precedent and you will see apple going after jailbreakers...
The Library of Congress already rule jb is legal. Try again.
And they have MORE muscle than SONY.
Whatever 'muscle' is? All you need to sue someone is money and both Apple and Sony have more than enough.

Someone was asking about scanner reviews - not too much that's current out there. Many reviews date from the late 90's!! I guess the push to digital cameras killed most of the market.

I should note that the 4000ED is my third generation dedicated 35mm scanner. I bought a first generation Nikon personal scanner back in 1993. Hard to get a good scan, as it's dynamic range was pretty bad. My second generation was a Polaroid Sprintscan from 1998. Much better, but single feed and still spotty with complicated slides. I bought the Nikon 4000 in 2003 and have been VERY happy with its performance.

I'm pretty good programming in PHP and Javascript, but now I need something that allows me to create simple desktop apps. Mostly it will be for automation scripts, too much for Apple Script, but not complex enough to jump into Cocoa and Objective-C. Examples: Manipulating text files (sorting, dupe line checking, adding/cutting parts, splitting/combining files etc.), uploading a file to several different FTP servers, sending POST requests to a server.
I often hear Pearl and Python mentioned and I believe they are pre-installed on the Mac, but I don't know much about them. What's the main difference? Which one (or something else?) would be best suited for these tasks? Which one is easier to learn?
Bonus: What's a good site to learn for someone who has general programming knowledge, but is a total noob with those languages?

I run a windows server at home with my movie collection and it has that uptime and then some.
In fact the only time it goes down is when the power goes out or I turn it off when I go on vacation.
On my acer windows 7 laptop, aside from going to sleep I haven't restarted it in months.

Have you tried all the best buys in Manhattan ?
Search JR Electronics (They have a few stores , and even one in macys herald square i believe) ? , ask if you can use prepaid debit cards ?
J and R only has one store, per se. It's departments are sometimes in seperate buildings, but it's really just one sprawling complex. It's apple section is on the 4th floor, not a ton of stuff there, I'd argue it's on par with the Apple section @ a typical best buy. Maybe a bit more stuff, but not significantly so.

9:18 am we're only talking about the mac today
I'm guessing that is supposed to be "NOT talking about the mac today"...
I wondered about that too, but ars also had that...

I honestly don't remember what website this popped up on, but Safari started downloading this MacSecurity.mpkg and it ran instantly and bypassed inputting my password? I couldn't really stop it
has anyone gotten this before? it took me to some webpage but I closed it
It said something about me being infected?
Am I going crazy? I didn't click anything(maybe by accident?) and yet this thing popped up, gave me a file and ran the installer without me being able to stop it lol wtf
can someone please explain, I think I'm missing something
After reading this post do this:
Go to Safari -> Safari Preferences (Command + ,)
Remove the checkmark from: Open safe files after downloading

I was going to make a new thread but came across this post. I want to implement scenario #2. What mode would I put the airport express in? Would they be broadcasting the same network twice if I wired it up like this (meaning I would see WirelessNetworkName twice)?
put it in "extend (bridge mode)" under connection sharing on the internet page.
then give it the same SSID and security settings as the main base.
your devices will automatically switch to the stronger signal as you move around the house. it will only appear once.
most large locations (like airports (not apple's devices, but the places with airplanes)) do this, and you never know.
that's only if you are using the same flavor of wireless (B,G, or N) on both units, if you are trying to create separate G & N networks, still use the bridge mode but give them different names. (up to you if the security settings are the same or not)

For what it's worth, I'll just throw in here that I too am waiting for a PM revision. (And have been, since the initial introduction, and then much more expectantly since MWSF).
*runs around room screaming in frustration, leaving trail of hair behind*
Macrumors is a cool site and the forums have a lot of cool people, but I think getting involved in the rumor mill has caused some serious stress...
Yeah, you're not the only one who's been stressing. It's especially not good when you tell PC people that you live with "I'm gonna get a dual G5 real soon and it's gonna be BADA**"...maybe with different words but to that degree, and the powermac doesn't even come out. I'm getting quite frustrated. I just ignore "Magic Tuesdays" anymore.

I have to disagree i don't think its too invasive and works very well with the tone of the imagery.... i have seen reels with alot worse choices in music... my own is a prime example... :D
Also you can see that the reel has been cut using the track at certain parts... so changing it would require re-editing the whole sequence.
A reel should be recut once a month if you are doing a bunch of work. But, me being 32 I like it. I know from people I have worked with the DVD would have been taken out and dismissed 15 seconds in by some agency suits. Remember, a reel is to show your work... since this is a graphics reel it should be about the graphics and not so in your face with hip-hop.
If you could find a 'karaoke' version of the song with no lyrics it would help the cause. My $.02
PS.. your motion graphics are sick. Good work!

sorry I should re-word what I originally said,
The software isn't cracked, I was given the software and a serial number, I presume my friend bought the software and gave me a serial number to use however I did not purchase it and I do not have the installation disks available to me anymore, all I was wondering is if I were to update the software would I need the disks to hand and if I did not purchase the software would this matter.
I am a student in the UK and I understand the MBP is expensive and the software in comparison is a negligible amount of money however I purchased this following a LONG time saving up and as I have no income except that for living costs I was glad to get some free software, I am not in the business of stealing software or piracy.
I was advised to come to these forums for help and advice from other Mac users, I didn't expect hostility and rudeness...
