Can someone tell me why the Mac is so finicky about what kind of memory you upgrade with?

I have been ok with Corsair 8gb upgrade memory, which many on this forum had suggested, for a while but noticed lately that I am getting the dreaded restart box lockup when I am trying to back up with time machine a ways into the process.

I put the OEM 4gb back in and it is working ok.

Can someone explain to me why it passes 30 minutes of memory testing on Techtools Pro software but freezes once in while on handbrake video encoding and always on the backup???

Thanks

Came across this article today.

http://www.anandtech.com/show/4275/apple-now-using-samsung-ssds-in-macbook-air

There's a big difference in both read and write speeds.

If you look closely, Anandtech refers to a MacRumors thread that we started here 2 months ago. That said, the Samsung drive does appear to be a nice silent upgrade for those lucky enough to get it.

So does this mean Catherine Zeta-Spartacus-Douglas-Jones will be doing ads for the iPhone?

:p

Nope. She's been dropped from T-Mobile advertisement. T-Mobile is trying to re-brand themselves right now.

Agreed, a little more detail would help.

I can only assume that a setup is already in place which would preserve the internet speed and local transfers. That setup is mostly wired from what I read and you possibly want to make use of Wifi. I'm also guessing that those 60 connections might be devices or services?

cheers.

If using the 1880-ix-12 controller will the non-raid 2x SSD drives in Pass Through mode that I want to attach to the Areca controller be bootable? Does the Areca card at all allow for the system to boot off it or will any attached volumes only initialize once in the OS ?
Yes.

Once you flash the card with the EBC firmware, and the desired disk on the card has been selected as the boot location in OS X, it will boot (array, JBOD, or pass through).

I have come to the idea that I ""need"" an iPod photo. I have never had an iPod before so I just have two quick questions. Do all of your pictures sync with the iPod from iPhoto? I really don't want this toi happen. I have 4.2 G of photos in iPhoto and I really would only want a few on the iPod. I do want all pics from the iPod to go to iPhoto. (from the media card reader attachment)

Also, can you do the same with iTunes? I don't want all the music in iTunes to be on the iPod.

Thanks,
Doug
Image (http://www.macrumors.com/2011/04/20/apple-reports-best-non-holiday-quarter-ever-with-5-99-billion-profit-for-q2-2011/)

Apple today announced financial results (http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2011/04/20results.html) for the first calendar quarter and second fiscal quarter of 2011. For the quarter, Apple posted revenue of $24.67 billion and net quarterly profit of $5.99 billion, or $6.40 per diluted share, compared to revenue of $13.50 billion and net quarterly profit of $3.07 billion, or $3.33 per diluted share, in the year-ago quarter. Gross margin was 41.4 percent, compared to 41.7 percent in the year-ago quarter, and international sales accounted for 59 percent of the quarter's revenue. The numbers represent the best non-holiday quarterly revenue and earnings in Apple history, just missing last quarter's $6 billion profit.

Apple shipped 3.76 million Macintosh computers during the quarter, a unit increase of 28 percent over the year-ago quarter. Quarterly iPhone unit sales reached a record 18.65 million, up 113 percent from the year-ago quarter, and the company also sold 9.02 million iPods during the quarter, representing 17 percent unit decline over the year-ago quarter. Apple also sold 4.69 million iPads during the quarter.Apple's guidance for the third quarter of fiscal 2011 includes expected revenue of $23 billion and earnings per diluted share of $5.03.

This quote for some reason does not show up.

That margin is truly ridiculous. Great for stockholders but really bad for consumers. A 41% profit margin, they could sell their $1000 computers for 800 dollars and still make the industry average profit.
With that kind of margin don't say they don't cost more than they should. But people still buy them because to them, they can be worth every penny.

I'm not saying that they are overpriced by definition because people still love buying them and it is the market who sets the actual value of an object. But they could lower their prices quite a bit.

Is it definitely in the headphone jack of your Mac?

Once plugged into the TV, select the necessary AV input (there's probably a little symbol next to the inputs on your TV to let you know which one to select - it won't be an HDMI input).

Ensure the red and white phonos on your TV aren't actually outputs.

Check the volume on your Mac is turned up.

What make is your TV.

If you can stretch your budget by another $50, the Canon SX230HS should be a great option. I have not used this model, but I have its predecessor, the SX210IS, and I love it. 14x optical zoom, GPS geotagging, 1080p video. The only thing I don't like about it is the low light capabilities, especially at the long end (although this is for my 210IS, not the 230HS, so they may have improved it a bit).

The S90 or S95 will almost certainly give you slightly better quality shots, but at a much higher price tag, and it lacks the GPS that you said would be nice. In the real world in normal light, and at close distances, you probably wouldn't be able to tell much of a difference.

Neither of these has a viewfinder. You'll be hard pressed to find any point and shoot these days that does. Micro 4/3's don't even come with viewfinders.

Here are some shots that my wife took with our SX210IS for reference. She knows little about the technical sides of photography and had the camera set to "easy auto" mode for all of these.

Thanks, you've really helped out.

One question that does come across though is once I flash the card with EFI and select the SSD as a boot drive from an existing OSX install I will want to install Mac OSX fresh on this now bootable SSD and ditch the default OSX installation on which I chose the SSD as the boot drive. Can I do this? Or must I clone the existing OSX install onto the new SSD drive first?

I was thinking after making the SSD boot drive I could simply boot off the OSX install discs and install OSX on this SSD?
You can do it either way.

Cloning is easier (already has both the OS and card drivers installed), but if you want a clean installation, you use the install disks, then the disk that came with the RAID card (card settings are on the card).

Another alternative, is start clean on the existing OS disk, then clone (this would should be more "fool proof" than trying to use the DVD installation disks directly to the SSD, as you could potentially run into an issue setting the SSD as the boot location if that's not already set (which makes a change in the system's firmware).

It's going to be a new system with no important data, so I don't care about cloning the existing OSX install which comes on the 1TB HDD with the 8-core 2010 Mac Pro. In fact I am going to pull that drive out altogether.
If the current installation isn't cluttered with things you no longer want/need (i.e. just the OS and RAID card drivers), creating a clone would be the fastest and easiest way to go.

If it is cluttered with crap you no longer want (reason for a clean OS X installation), see above.

Perhaps I am complicating things too much here and after flashing the card to EFI, I can just shut down, take out the original 1TB HDD with OSX. Start the PC, launch the Areca EFI RAID BIOS menu with the right key press, put the 2x SSD's in pass through mode and 4x 3TB in RAID5. Afterwards just boot off the OSX cd and it will see the 2x SSD drives and the RAID5 volume and just install OSX on one of the SSD's like I want? Will I have troubles installing Win 7 through bootcamp on the 2nd SSD drive when its running off the Areca in pass through mode ?
Put the Windows disk on the ICH (system's SATA ports), as the card cannot dual boot like that in a MP (been tried before and has never worked).

Other than the Windows disk, it will work.

Also maybe you know, for installing 2x 6G SSD's in the 2nd 5'25" optical bay I obviously need either the OWC multimount adapter bracket 2.5 to 5.25 or other, but for power do I need a SATA power Y splitter or something to get power to both SSD's ? Both of these will be connected to the Areca in pass through mode, the length of the included miniSAS cable should be fine to reach to the SSD's in the optical bay right ?
Well, since one of these needs to be connected to the DATA portion of the backplane cable and you need to split the power off for the OS X SSD (presume this is to be both the OS X and Windows disk locations, as it's the most logical), then do the following:

How to make a cable that retains both the DATA and splits power to multiple drives in the empty ODD bay.
Cables to buy:

Hi Guys,

A mac mini (2 months old) connected to a GOOD UPS is now rebooting on it's own 3-4 times a day.

There are log files generated for these events but are too detailed for my understanding.

Is there a simple event viewer (like MS eventvwr.msc) that can show me failed services, failed operations, etc., so I can try and track down what the heck is going on?

Any help would be appreciated.

In bed,

Sadly.

I was unemployed (laid off) and turned on the TV to note all sorts of news programs. I kept flipping the channels thinking it was just some political propaganda I didn't care about, until I spotted the video of the first plane.

I woke up between the two of them, and out of disbelief, I grabbed a stack of new VHS tapes and started recording. I still have the tapes, and plan to digitize them some day.

Guess what... I already have to get my PB repaired. Yay ! :(

Basically I have an iffy keyboard... It sucks. The tab button is obnoxiously loud and my "I" fails to respond if pressed in the wrong angle and my right arrow is ever-so-slightly above the rest of the other keys. Also my PB fails to play audio from its speakers if headphones are inserted, then removed. I have to half-insert, and remove the headphones to get my audio back... Ugh...

I plan to go to the SF Apple store in person.
So the questions:

Will Apple repair it on the spot?

If they have to send it back, how long would that take? And would I have to pick it back up in person, or do I have to go there?

Is the faulty headphone port attatched to the logic board? If so, would this mean a that I'd need to get another one? I don't like the idea of getting a refurbished board... So I hope not.

Would these issues warrent an entire HD backup?

If so, my other computer is a PC, with 128GB free (It has 2 HDs, one is 80GB (50 GB free), and the other is 200GB, 128 free [Slave drive]). This means its formatted as NTFS... How would I go about backing up my entire Mac HD?

I can't believe I already have to go through this. I got my PB around the end of may...

Thanks

EDIT: I think I put this in the wrong place... Sorry mods, feel free to move it to its appropriate spot.

Ok, the iTunes problems was not an iTunes problem. For whatever reason, my extra internal HD had a loose connection. I moved it around to another set of wires and it's perfectly ok. Problem solved.

As far as the fonts issue - I still have the problem but I went in (again) and reworked everything taking it down to bare bones. Then, instead of trying to manage fonts for all accounts (using FontBook) I now manage them by individual accounts. Meaning, I can simply drag and drop fonts to my user font folder just so I can 100% know what should be happening.

Agh...these problems have been nagging for a couple weeks now but it seems I've turned the corner.

The Mail issue does sound like it could be a font issue as well. At the height of this problem Mail and Safari would not even launch (duplicate fonts). Plus, when I was logging in I wasn't getting a complete login. Which also meant that when I went to logout there were other problems (like the OS logging out to the unix prompt or even simply shutting down on me).

Anyways, at least I can use Trade Gothic again and for now that's all that really matters. ;)

Good luck all...v
